Research

People are at the heart of our mahi, and the research we conduct would not be possible without our amazing participants. We want to acknowledge their efforts during and after their time with us, and to thank all our participants past, present, and future for their generosity and courage.

Since 2023, we have partnered with the team at Restore EMDR in Christchurch to expand our pool of participants. Their support has been instrumental in the data collection process, and we look forward to working with them in 2024 and beyond.

All the data and analysis below are property of Whakaora EMDR Ltd. This is a live data dashboard, so results will change over time as participants join us and complete assessments. Any use or citation of this research is granted for academic and research purposes only and with proper attribution. Please contact us with any questions.

01

Pre-treatment Assessments

All participants in our treatment programme are asked to complete a comprehensive psychological screening prior to engaging in treatment. These results establish a baseline level of symptomatology for conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

02

Between session feedback

During the course of their time with Whakaora, participants are asked to provide both qualitative and quantitative feedback regarding their experiences. This means we are able to capture the rich variety of experiences and allows us to improve our approach to best help our participants.

03

Follow-up assessments

At the end of treatment, the treatment doesn't end. Participants are asked to complete another round of assessments, which we can then compare to their pre-treatment results. These are the results you will see below.

Depression

Many participants feel whakamā when they begin treatment, as we see that reflected in our pre-treatment data.
Upon completing treatment, participants report significantly reduced symptoms of depression.

Anxiety

Our participants often experience anxiety before and during treatment. This is a natural part of trauma recovery for many people, and we support our participants with evidence-based treatment techniques for reducing anxiety.

Posttraumatic Stress

PTSD is the hallmark condition we address at Whakaora, and our results indicate that our treatment is effective across cohorts and delivery methods.

Sleep

Poor sleep, nightmares, and other forms of sleep disturbance are often the reason people initially seek treatment. Our approach to EMDR therapy addresses many of the causes of poor sleep, resulting in more counting sheep and less losing sleep.

Dissociation

Feeling distant from everyday experiences and like you are not in control are some of the aspects of dissociation. Our treatment helps participants regain control and addresses the underlying causes of dissociative experiences.

Analysis

Results are nice to have, however the real power is in the analysis. Our results were analyzed using a statistical test known as a t-test and are noted in the table to the left. A simple way to read this information is that, for each condition we assessed, anything below .05 is considered to be a significant result.

More detail on each group is available on our Analysis page, where we also explore further statistical tests and results.

Participant Count

Our alumni numbers are growing, and we look forward to seeing more participants in our next groups. If you want to join us, reach out and begin your recovery journey today!

"My success should not be bestowed onto me alone, it was not individual success but the success of a collective"

Whakaora has always been a collective effort, and feedback from our participants has been central to our journey of professional and personal improvement. As we have seen the clinical outcomes of our participants improve, we have also asked how we can do better. This is a process known as FeedbackInformed Therapy.

Feedback

Our participants teach us, and we grow as professionals based on their knowledge and experiences. They are asked to rate the therapeutic relationship, session goals and topics, our therapy methods, and their overall experience on a 0 to 10 scale after each session.
