Foundations of Healing: FAQs

1. What is the Foundations of Healing programme?

The Foundations of Healing programme is an intensive two-day experience designed to help individuals heal from trauma using Whakaora’s group EMDR protocol. Rooted in Māori cultural values, this programme provides a safe, supportive environment to explore themes of Mana (Authority and Respect), Wairua (Spiritual Wellbeing), Whanaungatanga (Connection and Relationships), and Kaupapa (Purpose and Principles). It offers tools and insights for holistic healing, fostering resilience and emotional wellbeing.

2. Who is this programme for?

This programme is for healthcare and mental health professionals seeking to address the effects of trauma, whether you are just beginning your healing journey or looking to deepen the work you’ve already started. It’s especially beneficial for those who feel ready to explore trauma in a structured, supportive group setting.

If you are an ACC Sensitive Claims client, you might be eligible for our ACC programme.

3. What happens during the sessions?

The programme consists of four 2-hour sessions spread over two days. Each session focuses on a specific theme, using guided exercises, reflections, and Whakaora’s group EMDR protocol. You’ll engage in personal reflection, processing using EMDR, and learn positive psychology practices that promote healing across mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions.

4. Do I need to share personal information during the sessions?

No, sharing personal stories or details is not required. While the programme encourages reflection and engagement with distressing memories, you will keep your experiences private.

5. How does group EMDR work?

Group EMDR follows the same evidence-based principles as individual EMDR therapy but is adapted for a group setting. While the process is structured, it does not require participants to disclose specific traumas. Instead, you’ll work on your personal reflections privately while benefiting from the shared group experience.

The Foundations of Healing programme combines the proven efficacy of EMDR therapy with the holistic approach of Māori cultural values. This unique integration addresses all aspects of wellbeing—mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual—providing a comprehensive healing experience.

7. What should I bring to the programme?

We recommend bringing a notebook or journal, comfortable clothing, and any items that help you feel grounded, such as a water bottle or a small personal comfort item. All other materials will be provided.

8. Will I need follow-up sessions after the programme?

While many participants find significant value in the two-day intensive, healing is a journey. Some may choose to continue with individual therapy, join other group programmes, or access follow-up resources. We’ll provide recommendations and support for next steps based on your needs.
